I'm telling you no big news when I speak about this trend in rock music with all those musicians who choose to be solo artists instead of being in a band and travel the world with just an acoustic guitar. It doesn't matter if those guys have been quite unknown so far far or - just like in this case - have been pretty renowned indie heroes: Troy von Balthazar is/has been the singer in Chokebore. The second, remarkable trend is the one of crudity. Has Troy really written a complete album or has he just collected some of his ideas? Sometimes this one sounds like if he'd just taken a dictaphone and slopped some chords while someone backdrop made noises with the weirdest things. You'll only hear some "production" when there are some crappy sound effects making the whole thing even stranger. The crudity als shows in rudimentary song strucutres: obviously less is more. No doubt that Troy is a good song writer, as he has proven spectacularly in the past, I just simply have to get used to this kind of musical thriftiness.
