KENZARIS MIDDLE KATA - Black Box Consciousness (Millipede)

After listening to their EP When Error Is The Idea I praised this band from southern Germany as "one of the most promising bands in modern hardcore in this country". I was curious if KMK would be able to keep this level with their first album. To make it short: they were. I think the artwork doesn't really fit the music, because it makes them seem to be darker than they are. On the contrary, they have a hellish drive and that sets me in a good mood. They do that with some crazy changes of rhythm and tempo, just like a hyper active child that can't sit quiet for a single moment. The guitars play some tricky lines that show haw you can work with two complementary guitars. It can be tiring after some time, but on the other hand the chords even kick more ass when they come. But the rhythm section alone is worth every admission fee. But next to all abstraction, next to all mathematics and creative demands: the songs stick in your ear almost immediately. Respect to those who are able to write songs like this. But I have to say that KMK really have the right idols. Instead of following some faceless over-styled screamo idiots the boombox in their rehearsal room probably plays albums of the nerds, who are way, way cooler through their restraint. Black Box Consciousness is an overwhelming debut album which is able to compete even internationally - other than our national football team.
