| BORIS - smile (southern lord) |
|
The first time I heard about Boris was when my friend Boris (no, I'm not kidding) was asking me to go to a show of them, becase, like he said, "I have to go man. It's the name." I didn't go with him and I didn't ask him how he liked them, but listening to Smile makes me feel like I must have missed something. Boris aren't just into simply making music. They are searching for unconventional sounds and find them in 80's hair metal and japanese culture trash. The result is a very droned piece of music that has in my opinion its strength in the more quiet parts, because they're so gloriously oblique. The rocking parts aren't bad either, but there are too many standard rock riffs to make these parts really interesting. It's not really clear to me when it's the right time to listen to the record. Maybe loud in the car. Probably when you want to be a bit weird. |
