| BIRTHMARK - The Layer (Coraille/Dunix) |
| I really l o v e this nerdy Kinsella family! They "suffer" from some kind of musical autism and they steadily release albums so strange that they can't seem to be influenced by anything you've heard before. After all I've always liked bands like Owls, Joan Of Arc or Make Believe. If you've heard of these bands you sure know Nate Kinsella - who is Birthmark. This time he's playing his own songs and for the sake of simplicity he has also recorded all of the instruments himself, even including strange wind instruments. The songs? Well, they show a typical Kinsella-socialisation: weird rhythms, strange melodies and a peculiar mood that's relaxed and psyched at the same time. "The Layer" is a singer/songwriter album, but none of the boring ones with some lonely kid playing distressed songs on his acoustic guitar. This album is not as substantial as many of the other Kinsella bands, but definitely not worse. |
